About
Why Korean
Korea is more than K-pop, drama, and street food. Behind every trend is a way of thinking shaped by centuries of collective memory, Confucian inheritance, rapid modernization, and everyday choices that quietly surprise outsiders. This site looks past the surface and into the why.

What you’ll read here
Long-form, footnoted when it matters, written for international readers who already know the basics — and want to understand the country underneath. Each piece starts with a single observation and traces it back to its cause.
The four directions: Culture (rituals, holidays, the inherited rules), Daily life (apartments, convenience stores, the small things), Society (work, family, hierarchy — visible and invisible), Language (why grammar shapes how people stand next to each other).
Who writes this
Seoul-based writer covering Korean culture and society for international readers. Seven years on the ground, fluent in both observation and translation. Previously contributed to publications focused on East Asia and design.
What this site is not
Not a travel guide. Not a K-pop blog. Not a list of best restaurants. There are excellent versions of all of those elsewhere. This is the slower thing — the explanation behind the photograph.
